The Apple of my Eye Newborn Hat- how to May 8, 2012

I saw a hat online yesterday that had a similar shape and decided to make this delicious treat for newborn photo shoots.  Its aptly named “The Apple of my Eye” and it is very simple to make.

Materials

Caron’s Simply Soft in

  • Choclate (or any brown, for stem)
  • Garnet (or any red, for apple)
  • Pistachio (or any green for leaves)

4.0 mm crochet hook

5.0 mm crochet hook

embroidery needle to sew in ends

Abbreviations

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

dc- double crochet

sl st- slip stitch

st- stitch

sp- space

cst- completed stitches in rnd

rnd(s)- round(s)

yo- yarn over

Pattern

STEM

Using 4.0mm hook, starting  with brown for stem  create magic circle– crochet 5 sc inside circle, join with sl st

Rnds 2 thru 10- working in a spiral sc in each sp until 10 rows (or desired stem length is achieved)             *be sure to weave in beginning tail after completing 2-3 rows or you will never be able to sew it in and it will not stay closed tight.

BODY (apple)

Rnd 1 – Change color to red for body of apple 3 hdc into every sc sp (15 cst)

Rnd 2- Change to 5.0 mm hook hdc crochet in every hdc sp, with 2 hdc in every other hdc sp (30 cst)

Rnd 3- 1 hdc in every hdc sp with 2 hdc in every 5th hdc sp (35 cst)

Rnd 4- 1 hdc in every hdc sp with 2 hdc in every 6th hdc sp (with the exception of last set, you will not get to 6th space and will only crochet 5 to finish) (40 cst)

Rnds 5-12- 1 hdc in every hdc sp (40 cst in each rnd)

Rnds 13-14- sc in every hdc sp (40 cst in east rnd)

LEAVES

Large Leaf

leave a tail of 6 inches and chain 10

turn sc to end (9 cst)

turn and going up leave do, sc, sc, hdc, hdc, dc, hdc, hdc, sc, sc, ch 1

go back down other side doing same stitches in reverse (sc, sc, hdc, hdc, dc, hdc, hdc, sc, sc)

insert hook into bottom of leave and pick up both loose ends, yo and pull completely through to fasten off

(leave a tail long enough to attach leaf to hat)

Small Leaf

leave a tail of 6 inches and chain 7

turn sc to end (6 cst)

turn and going up leave do, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sc ch 1

go back down other side doing same stitches in reverse (sc, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc)

insert hook into bottom of leave and pick up both loose ends, yo and pull completely through to fasten off (leave a tail long enough to attach leaf to hat)

Using embroidery needle weave in all loose ends on hat and sew leaves (small leaf first, large leaf slightly overlapping top of small leaf) at base of stem.
